NEW YORK — Thursday marks the 120th birthday of Mao Zedong, founding father of the People's Republic of China, but the leadership's celebrations of his legacy are an alarming reminder that China has a long way to go before it can join the league of modern nations.
It is certainly not taught in textbooks, but Mao's record was nothing short of a disaster: The Great Famine of 1958-61 — the result of a course of industrialization known as the Great Leap Forward — caused starvation not seen on a scale since Stalin's collectivization. Meticulous research by the journalist Yang Jisheng and the historian Frank Dikötter has estimated the death toll at anywhere from 36 million to 45 million.

Like American corporations, American colleges and universities have been extending their brands overseas, building campuses, study centers and partnerships, often in countries with autocratic governments. Unlike corporations, universities claim to place ideals and principles, especially academic freedom, over income. But as professors abroad face consequences for what they say, most universities are doing little more than wringing their hands. Unlike foreign programs that used to be faculty-driven, most of the newer ones are driven by administrations and money.

Pretending that false and ugly things don't exist is a bit delusional. Yet such prettifying is consistent with a culture dominated by an Internet concerned mainly with marketing techniques.
All quarrels are not petty. Sometimes quarrels are about big things, and it's an actual privilege to take a side in them.

Một khi anh trả người ta mức lương thấp thì người ta phải xoay xở thêm nhiều việc khác để có mức thu nhập đủ dùng. Còn đâu thì giờ và tâm trí lo cho việc chính. Hơn nữa khi xoay xở những việc khác ấy thì rất dễ nảy sinh tiêu cực... Ngoài xã hội là như thế và trong ngành Giáo dục cũng là như thế. Không thể duy tâm trong chế độ lương bổng này, một chế độ lương bổng sở dĩ cứ duy trì mãi là vì nó có lợi cho một số “quan tham”...

Ngày nay, nghe đến từ "chủ thuyết", "chủ nghĩa", nhiều người nhíu mày e ngại.

"Không nên để học vấn mãi làm người khách trọ. Hãy cử hành hôn lễ với chàng (nàng) thôi!". Lời khuyên ấy của De Montaigne (1533-1592), nhà hiền triết người Pháp, dẫn đến lời khuyên tiếp theo của cụ Nguyễn Du: "Trăm năm tính chuyện vuông tròn/phải dò cho đến ngọn nguồn lạch sông".

TT - Nếu muốn cải cách giáo dục thật sự, trước hết cần làm rõ mục đích của việc học bằng cách trả lời câu hỏi: Học để làm gì?

Đất nước chúng ta vừa bước qua cột mốc về dân số 90 triệu dân, là quốc gia có dân số chỉ đứng sau 13 quốc gia trên thế giới. Có vị bộ trưởng vừa phát biểu rằng tài nguyên lớn nhất của chúng ta là con người, xét theo góc độ này thì chúng ta giàu thứ 14 thế giới về “số lượng” tài nguyên con người.
