Long Pham’s longshot campaign for state Senate took a curious turn last week when he filled out the Register’s voters guide questionnaire: “Ph.D. Engineering Management, 2003; School location/dissertation content are classified.”
Pham runs for office nearly every election. The Fountain Valley resident, has won once out of nine tries, a four-year term on the Orange County Department of Education Board in 2008. When he filled out the Register’s voters guide for his failed 2006 bid for state Assembly, he wrote that his Ph.D. came from Madison University.
Madison University – a Mississippi business specializing in “distance learning” – was characterized as a “diploma mill” in a Sacramento Bee investigation into 16 firefighters who received pay raises after getting bachelor’s degrees from Madison and similar schools. The pay hikes were revoked when it was determined the degrees do not meet required standards.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis made history on Sunday, elevating to sainthood John XXIII and John Paul II, two of his most famous papal predecessors, in a ceremony bearing themes of hope and reconciliation for the world’s one billion Roman Catholics.
Francis, who made the decision to hold the joint canonization, portrayed the two former popes as “men of courage” who shared a place in history.
“They were priests, bishops and popes of the 20th century,” he said in his homily. “They lived through the tragic events of that century, but they were not overwhelmed by them. For them, God was more powerful; faith was more powerful.”
“This is a political balancing act,” said Kenneth Briggs, the noted religion writer. “Unfortunately, the comparisons are invidious. John opened up the church to the world and J.P. II began to close it down again, make it into a more restricted community, putting boundaries up.”
John XXIII, whose reign lasted from 1958 to 1963, comes out “free and clear,” Briggs noted, while John Paul has a “cloud hanging over his papacy.”
Martin is an affable, candid, terrifically smart man, and he is loquacious. We talked for 10 hours that day, breaking only for dinner. His way of discussing Game of Thrones surprised me: He often spun questions into larger dissertations about history, war and society. Because Martin is a big man, with an infectious laugh and white hair, there might seem something of a Santa Claus aspect about him, except for his eyes, which are constantly flickering with thought – some of it quite dark – conveying a mind as shrewd as that belonging to any of his characters.

CBS made its choice, quickly and definitively: Stephen Colbert will succeed David Letterman as the host of its late-night franchise, which Mr. Letterman created when he came to the network in 1993.
Mr. Colbert, the star of Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report,” will be — in one way — an all-new talent for CBS because he will drop the broadly satirical blowhard conservative character he has played for nine years, and instead perform as himself.
Facing growing criticism, Brandeis University said Tuesday that it had reversed course and would not award an honorary degree to Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a campaigner for women’s rights and a fierce critic of Islam, who has called the religion “a destructive, nihilistic cult of death.”
“We cannot overlook that certain of her past statements are inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values,” the university said in a statement released eight days after it had announced that Ms. Hirsi Ali and four other people would be honored at its commencement on May 18.
