His death was confirmed by the French president, François Hollande, who called Mr. Resnais one of France's greatest filmmakers.

Jonathan Schell, a best-selling nonfiction author whose books explored warfare in its myriad 20th-century incarnations, from a scathing indictment of United States policy in Vietnam to a sobering portrait of the world in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust, died on Tuesday at his home in Brooklyn. He was 70.
Mr. Schell came to public notice in his early 20s with his first book, "The Village of Ben Suc" (1967), which chronicled the systematic devastation of a South Vietnamese village by American forces. He came to greater prominence in 1982 with "The Fate of the Earth," a study of the perils of the nuclear arms race that spent several months on The New York Times's best-seller list.

Khushwant Singh, an Indian diplomat, author and journalist who was one of his country's best-known chroniclers of strife and slaughter, died on Thursday at his home in New Delhi.
His most widely read work was "Train to Pakistan," a slim, chilling novel about the 1947 partition of British-ruled India, in which sectarian strife claimed an estimated one million lives as the twin republics of India and Pakistan were born.
"Why am I an Indian?" he asked in an essay. "I did not have any choice: I was born one. If the good Lord had consulted me on the subject I might have chosen a country more affluent, less crowded, less censorious in matters of food and drink, unconcerned with personal equations and free of religious bigotry."
