Một cây đại thụ đáng kính của ngành báo chí, phát thanh Việt Nam từ trong nước ra đến hải ngoại, nhà báo Vũ Ánh (1941-2014), qua đời đột ngột tại Quận Cam ngày 14/3.
Trong 50 năm trời, từ khi mới ra đại học năm 23 tuổi, ông liên tục làm báo. Thời trước 1975, ông làm phóng viên chiến trường, dần dần lên đến Chánh sự vụ Sở Thời sự đài Phát thanh Sài Gòn, một chức vụ khiến ông bị bắt và bị giam trong trại cải tạo suốt 13 năm.
Ông mất khoảng vài phút hay vài giờ sau khi làm xong công việc ông từng làm trong nửa thế kỷ: viết báo. Bài báo cuối cùng, "Hà Nội vẫn chưa đủ niềm tin cởi trói báo chí," ông gửi đi lúc 11:37, và không bao lâu sau đó ông qua đời.

Joel Brinkley, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who spent more than two decades at The New York Times, where he displayed range, rigor and lucid writing as a White House correspondent, as Jerusalem bureau chief and as an editor, died on Tuesday in Washington. He was 61.
Mr. Brinkley was a son of David Brinkley, the widely respected television news anchor, and he established his own journalism reputation early in his career. In 1980, while working at The Louisville Courier-Journal, he won a Pulitzer for international reporting for his coverage of the Cambodian refugee crisis. He was not yet 30.

Charlotte Brooks, one of only a handful of women ever hired to work as a full-time staff photographer at Look magazine, the major rival to Life in the heyday of American glossy photojournalism, died on March 15 at her home in Holmes, N.Y. She was 95.
Like most women in journalism during the 1950s and '60s, Ms. Brooks was assigned almost exclusively at Look to provide pictures for what were known as women's features: articles about children, families, education, homes, food and other constituent parts of women's supposed domain.

Vera Chytilova, a filmmaker often called the first lady of Czech cinema, whose work — subversive, experimental and strongly feminist — was long banned in her homeland, died on March 12 in Prague. She was 85.
Mordant, darkly farcical satires of life in Communist Czechoslovakia, Ms. Chytilova's movies might employ disjointed, nonlinear narratives; rapid, deliberately dizzying cuts; speeded-up or slowed-down action; and stark shifts between black-and-white and color from one scene to the next.
"I was daring enough to want to do what I wanted," she said, "even if it was a mistake."

Jeremiah A. Denton Jr., a retired Navy rear admiral and former U.S. senator who survived nearly eight years of captivity in North Vietnamese prisons, and whose public acts of defiance and patriotism came to embody the sacrifices of American POWs in Vietnam, died March 28 at a hospice in Virginia Beach. He was 89.

Thầy là Ủy viên Ban chấp hành Trung ương Mặt trận Tổ quốc Việt Nam khóa 5 và 6, Chủ tịch Hội Văn Nghệ dân gian tỉnh Nghệ An.
Phó Giáo sư Ninh Viết Giao đã công bố 50 cuốn sách gồm nhiều thể loại văn hóa dân gian: Câu đố Việt Nam (1958), hát phường vải (1961), Ca dao xứ Nghệ, Kho tàng vè xứ Nghệ (gồm 9 tập), truyện cổ tích, truyện cười dân gian, hương ước Nghệ An, Tục thờ thần và thần tích Nghệ An, Văn hóa ẩm thực dân gian xứ Nghệ, Nghề truyền thống, Văn bia, Từ điển nhân vật xứ Nghệ, Nghệ An: lịch sử và văn hóa. Nghệ An: Đất phát nhân tài v.v..

Ms. Hernández, who became one of the first four members of Mr. Castro's general staff, and who died at 92 on March 9 in Havana, went on to share many secrets with the man she helped make the Cuban revolution — beginning with its opening volley, an attack on the Moncada army barracks in southeastern Cuba on July 26, 1953.<br>For her revolutionary services, which included helping to start the Cuban Communist Party, Ms. Hernández was named a national heroine, among many other honors. After the Vietnam War ended on terms most Communists liked, she was her country's ambassador to the united Vietnam.

Roger Hilsman, a foreign policy adviser in the Kennedy administration who helped draft a cable giving tacit American support to a coup against President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam, died on Feb. 23 at his home in Ithaca, N.Y. He was 94.
As assistant secretary of state for Far Eastern affairs, he joined with Michael Forrestal of the National Security Council and W. Averell Harriman, undersecretary of state for political affairs, to draft Cable 243 — often referred to as the Hilsman cable. Dated Aug. 24, 1963, it was sent to the United States ambassador to Saigon, Henry Cabot Lodge Jr.

Maj. Kurt Chew-Een Lee, a Chinese-American who led Marines into battle against the Chinese in the Korean War and was cited for bravery for helping to preserve a crucial evacuation route for 8,000 American soldiers, was found dead on March 3 at his home in Washington. He was 88.
"Certainly, I was never afraid," he told The Washington Post in 2010. "Perhaps the Chinese are all fatalists. I never expected to survive the war. So I was adamant that my death be honorable, be spectacular."
