Richard Attenborough, a distinguished stage and film actor in Britain who reinvented himself to become the internationally admired director of the epic “Gandhi” and other films, died on Sunday. He was 90.
Until the early 1960s, Mr. Attenborough was a familiar actor in Britain but little known in the United States. But it was not until he appeared with his friend Steve McQueen and a sterling ensemble cast in the 1963 war film “The Great Escape,” his first Hollywood feature, that he found a trans-Atlantic audience. His role, as a British officer masterminding an escape plan from a German prisoner-of-war camp, was integral to one of the most revered and enjoyable of all World War II films.

Lauren Bacall, the actress whose provocative glamour elevated her to stardom in Hollywood’s golden age and whose lasting mystique put her on a plateau in American culture that few stars reach, died on Tuesday in New York. She was 89.
With an insinuating pose and a seductive, throaty voice — her simplest remark sounded like a jungle mating call, one critic said — Ms. Bacall shot to fame in 1944 with her first movie, Howard Hawks’s adaptation of the Ernest Hemingway novel “To Have and Have Not,” playing opposite Humphrey Bogart, who became her lover on the set and later her husband.
It was a smashing debut sealed with a handful of lines now engraved in Hollywood history.

(TNO) Nhà văn Anh Đức, "cha đẻ" của nhân vật chị Tư Hậu và chị Sứ, đã qua đời vào rạng sáng nay 22.8, hưởng thọ 79 tuổi.
Nhà văn Anh Đức, tên thật là Bùi Đức Ái, sinh năm 1935 tại An Giang. Ông nhanh chóng gia nhập phong trào kháng chiến ở miền Nam, và được nhà văn Đoàn Giỏi phát hiện, bồi dưỡng năng khiếu văn học.
Năm 1958, nhà văn Anh Đức cho ra đời tiểu thuyết Một chuyện chép ở bệnh viện, kể lại cuộc hội ngộ với người phụ nữ trẻ, giàu nghị lực tên Tư Hậu. Sau đó, nhân vật này đã trở nên quen thuộc với rất nhiều thế hệ người Việt khi tiểu thuyết được chuyển thể thành kịch bản của bộ phim Chị Tư Hậu nổi tiếng.

Harun Farocki, an avant-garde German filmmaker and video artist whose work examined the ways images are used to inform, instruct, persuade and propagandize, died on Wednesday near Berlin. He was 70.<br>His best-known early film, “Inextinguishable Fire” (1969), is a meditation on the United States’ use of napalm in Vietnam. Little actual combat footage was employed; instead, Mr. Farocki presented images suggesting the sterile offices of the Dow Chemical Company, which manufactured napalm.
