Mr. Satyarthi is not an international celebrity like 17-year-old Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan, with whom he is sharing the prize. Instead, he has labored for three decades to shave away at the numbingly huge problem of child slavery in India, using undercover operatives and camera crews to find the airless workrooms and mine shafts where children were being kept.
About 28 million children ages 6 to 14 are working in India, according to Unicef, the United Nations children's agency. Mr. Satyarthi's organization, called Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or Save the Children Mission, is credited with freeing some 70,000 of them.

"Haunted Files: The Eugenics Record Office," a new exhibit at the university's Asian/Pacific/American Institute, transports visitors to 1924, the height of the eugenics movement in the United States. Inside a dimly lit room, the sounds of an old typewriter click and clack, a teakettle whistles and papers shuffle. The office's original file cabinets loom over reproduced desks and period knickknacks. Creaky cabinets slide open, and visitors are encouraged to thumb through copies of pseudoscientific papers.
"There's a haunted quality, that's the nature of the files," said John Kuo Wei Tchen, a historian at N.Y.U. and co-curator of the exhibit.

The Urban Climate Resilience in Southeast Asia Partnership (UCRSAP), located in the Asia Institute at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, invites applications for a one-year (with possibility of renewal for up to three years) UCRSAP Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Urban Climate Change Resilience.

With full backing from his publisher, Katharine Graham, Mr. Bradlee led The Post into the first rank of American newspapers, courting controversy and giving it standing as a thorn in the side of Washington officials.
Mr. Bradlee — "this last of the lion-king newspaper editors," as Phil Bronstein, a former editor of The San Francisco Chronicle, described him — could be classy or profane, an energetic figure with a boxer's nose who almost invariably dressed in a white-collared, bold-striped Turnbull & Asser shirt, the sleeves rolled up.

The noted peace activist Fred Branfman passed away this past week after suffering the effects of ALS (Lou Gherig's disease).
To get the story of the secret war out to the public, Fred came up with the novel idea of recording the refugee's drawings, providing readers a graphic depiction of the horrors of modern automated war. Voices From the Plain of Jars was dedicated to Sao Doumma, a lovely twenty five year old woman from the Plain of Jars killed in a bombing raid in August 1969, and all the others who had perished. The book included songs, poetry and testimonials written by the victims of the US air war. One woman proclaimed that her life had become like that of a "hunted animal desperately trying to escape their hunters….Human beings, whose parents carefully brought them into the world and carefully raised them with overflowing love, these human beings would die from a single blast."
