Lawrence S. Phillips, a longtime executive with Phillips-Van Heusen, his family's clothing company, and a founder of the American Jewish World Service, an aid organization dedicated to ending poverty and promoting human rights in developing countries, died on Friday at his home in Boca Raton, Fla. He was 88.
For nearly 50 years Mr. Phillips held a variety of executive posts at Phillips-Van Heusen, a men's clothing company that traces its origins to 1881, when his great-grandfather Moses sold work shirts sewn by his wife, Endel, to coal miners in Pottsville, Pa.
He made his biggest impact, however, as a philanthropist, most notably when he joined with Laurence Simon, now a professor of international development at Brandeis University, to create a Jewish aid organization with broader aims than traditional Jewish charities.

Ali Salem, an Egyptian writer and playwright whose account of a solo drive through Israel became a best seller in his country but angered many Egyptians, died on Tuesday at his home in Cairo. He was 79.
Mr. Salem's writings include 15 books and 25 plays. His play "School of the Troublemakers," from 1971, about a class of riotous teenagers reformed by a teacher, became one of the most popular comedies in the Arab world.

Carl E. Schorske, a professor and scholar whose collection of essays fixing turn-of-the-century Vienna as the radiating source of modernist thinking won a Pulitzer Prize in 1981 and remains an exemplar of cultural history, died on Sunday in East Windsor, N.J. He was 100.
"Vienna, in the fin de siècle, with its acutely felt tremors of social and political disintegration, proved one of the most fertile breeding grounds of our century's ahistorical culture," Professor Schorske wrote. "Its great intellectual innovators — in music and philosophy, in economics and architecture, and, of course, in psychoanalysis — all broke, more or less deliberately, their ties to the historical outlook central to the 19th-century liberal culture in which they'd been reared."

Thomas Sobol, a courtly railway worker's son who became a leading educator and fervent advocate for imposing broad academic standards, subsidizing poor urban districts, empowering parents and teachers to make policy, and promoting a multicultural curriculum, died on Thursday at his home in Scarsdale, N.Y. He was 83.
As commissioner, Dr. Sobol had pressed for what he called A New Compact for Learning, a broad manifesto aimed at transferring policy making from sluggish bureaucracies to educators and parents, and at creating grade-specific curriculum standards that local school districts could implement on their own.
Diane Ravitch, the education historian, wrote in an email: "Tom Sobol was the last state commissioner who understood that education means something more than test-taking and high scores."

Daniel Thompson, who five decades ago automated the arcane art of bagel making, a development — seen variously as saving grace and sacrilege — that has sent billions of mass-produced bagels raining down on the American heartland, died on Sept. 3 in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 94.
Bagel-making was still a skilled trade then, restricted to members of the International Beigel Bakers Union, as the name was Romanized after the organization was founded in New York in 1907. (Until well into the 1950s, the minutes of the union's board meetings were taken down in Yiddish.)

Hôm nay, ngày 5-9, các trường phổ thông trên cả nước tổ chức lễ khai giảng năm học mới 2016-2017 và Ngày hội toàn dân đưa trẻ đến trường.

Hôm nay 5/9, gần 23 triệu học sinh, sinh viên trên cả nước tham dự Lễ khai giảng năm học mới 2016 – 2017. Đây có lẽ là năm học đầu tiên các trường học trên cả nước cùng tổ chức Lễ khai giảng trong cùng thời gian, cùng ngày và cùng nghi thức.

Nhân dịp khai giảng năm học 2016-2017, Chủ tịch nước Trần Đại Quang đã gửi thư chúc mừng tới các thế hệ cán bộ, công chức, viên chức ngành Giáo dục, các bậc phụ huynh và các em học sinh, sinh viên trong cả nước.

Vì vậy, để trở thành những người con xứng đáng và hữu ích cho Giáo Hội và Quê Hương, ngay từ bây giờ, khi đến trường, các con không được chỉ tìm học thêm kiến thức, nhưng còn phải rèn luyện con người của mình về mọi mặt mà Cha gồm tóm lại trong 4 chữ “Thành”: Thành Tài, Thành Công, Thành Nhân, Thành Thánh.
