Giới học thuật, trí thức Việt Nam trong những ngày qua xôn xao về chuyện việc ra mắt cuốn sách nghiên cứu về nhân vật Trương Vĩnh Ký bị "lệnh miệng" đình lại.

Bằng một giọng buồn rầu, nhà nghiên cứu Nguyễn Đình Đầu nói rằng “ai đó” đã đọc cuốn sách viết về Trương Vĩnh Ký (1837-1898) của ông chưa kỹ, nên ra lệnh ách lại. Tuy vậy, ông vẫn nuôi hy vọng rồi mọi thứ sẽ trở lại bình thường khi cuốn sách nhận được lệnh cần phải sửa đổi gì đó, và được tái phát hành.

Sinh ra tại Buôn Mê Thuột và lớn lên tại California, tác giả Việt Thanh Nguyễn là người Mỹ gốc Việt đầu tiên được giải Pulitzer thể loại tiểu thuyết hư cấu của cuốn sách đầu tay, “The Sympathizer” (Cảm Tình Viên). Với một cách viết rất khéo léo và đầy tinh vi, anh đã nói lên được sự phức tạp của chiến tranh Việt Nam và Mỹ và đưa ra một tiếng nói không mấy quen thuộc trong văn chương chiến tranh Việt Nam: Đó là tiếng nói đầy mâu thuẫn của một người gián điệp thân Cộng.

Roland Barthes’s “Writing Degree Zero,” which I sadly have not read yet. Paisley Rekdal’s forthcoming “The Broken Country: On Trauma, a Crime, and the Continuing Legacy of the Vietnam War.” Jeff Chang’s “We Gon’ Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation,” since I want to learn what we need to do to make everything alright. Linh Dinh’s “Postcards From the End of America,” which chronicles a declining America through the author’s travels among the down and out. Perhaps many liberal and leftist writers think they should reach out to this part of our country, but Linh Dinh is one of the few to do it. Solmaz Sharif’s “Look,” a work of poetry that is about war and language, drawing partially from the Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (I’ve been reading a bit at the intersections of war and poetry, most recently the excellent volumes “Night Sky With Exit Wounds,” by Ocean Vuong, and “Hardly War,” by Don Mee Choi). Ta-Nehisi Coates’s “Black Panther,” because the character and the author are an awesome combination. Perhaps I’ll find inspiration for the comic book I would love to write someday about Agent Orange, an anti-imperialist crime-fighter who is simultaneously superhuman and disabled, born as a result of the dioxin that the United States sprayed in Vietnam. I promise it will be funny.

“All wars are fought twice, the first time on the battlefield, the second time in memory,” writes Nguyen, the Aerol Arnold Chair of English and professor of English and American studies and ethnicity at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
“Nothing Ever Dies gives us a framework for how to think about justice, forgiveness and reconciliation that would be completely sentimental if I talked about it in The Sympathizer,” Nguyen said.

Chiều 29-4, Nhà xuất bản Đại Học Huế ra mắt cuốn sách Triết gia Trần Đức Thảo - Di cảo, khảo luận, kỷ niệm do nhà nghiên cứu Nguyễn Trung Kiên sưu tầm và biên soạn.

Chín tập bản thảo với gần 9.000 trang, trong đó có khoảng một nửa bằng tiếng Pháp, là kết quả nghiên cứu của GS Trần Đức Thảo - nhà triết học VN duy nhất nổi tiếng thế giới - từ những năm 1964 đến tháng 2-1993, được ông gửi riêng cho cố Thủ tướng Phạm Văn Đồng, đã được nhà thơ Việt Phương - nguyên trợ lý của thủ tướng - trao tặng NXB Đại Học Quốc Gia Hà Nội ngày 31-5-2006 trong buổi ra mắt tập sách Triết gia lữ hành Trần Đức Thảo.

“Human Acts,” much like Han’s novel “The Vegetarian,” which won the Man Booker International Prize, shows Han’s imaginative and meaningful obsession with violence upon the body. It also reveals another, perhaps more fundamental, obsession: dissonance.
